Engineers Remain In High Demand Despite Downturn.

Engineers Remain In High Demand Despite Downturn.

The Wall Street Journal (12/23, Needleman) reports, "While the employment landscape looks sparse right now, the outlook for 2009 isn't uniformly bleak." Experts note that, "in the medical field, there aren't enough nurses, home-health aides, medical assistants and pharmacy technicians to fill vacancies at health-care providers, such as hospitals and clinics." Engineers are also in demand, particularly "those who specialize in environmental, biomedical, civil, aerospace and industrial engineering." Art Lucas, chief executive officer of Lucas Group, explained, "Companies still need people who can come in and design products. ... The manufacturing process also needs to be efficient, so people who have those technical engineering skills are always in demand." Further, "more engineering jobs...are likely to open up in the next year or so, thanks to a proposed stimulus by the incoming presidential administration that will focus on improving infrastructure."

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler might look to Romania for inspiration on how to reinvent themselves

Globe and Mail Update
ROME — As unlikely as it sounds, the Big Three Detroit auto makers might look to Romania for inspiration on how to reinvent themselves.
Romania is a struggling Eastern European country that gets little attention in the rest of Europe, or anywhere else. The country's industrial base is in rough shape, though slowly improving as it creeps into the European Union fold. But it has one industry that stands out as an international success story - car making.
Romania's Automobile Dacia is one of the few high-growth car businesses in the otherwise ailing global auto industry. The brand's French owner, Renault, couldn't be happier. The Dacia is a genuine low-cost car that rolls out of the factory near Bucharest with a fat profit margin.
The machine sells well throughout Europe, and elsewhere, because it is not a jalopy pieced together with 40-year-old parts from Warsaw Pact trucks. The Dacia's engineering and drivability, if not visual appeal, come close to the standards of the latest Renault cars.
The lesson: You don't necessarily need dazzling technology to make a buck in a competitive market (though it certainly can help, as Toyota learned with the hybrid Prius). You do need an inexpensive, safe, reliable car that can appeal to the masses.

Smart Networking manifesto by Liz Lynch

Key topics of the Smart Networking manifesto include:
  • Networking is Easier Than You Think --> Whatever path you dream of pursuing, there are people out there who can help. So why aren't you meeting them?
  • Broaden Your View of How Your Network Can Help --> Leveraging our networks can help us mitigate a variety of challenges we face every day.
  • Break Out of Your Comfort Zone --> Change is hard. But change that you initiate is easier to manage than change that's forced on you.
  • Learn How Networking is Different Today...and Use That to Your Advantage --> Remind yourself that there's a real person behind every profile, not a dollar sign.
  • Network Smarter, Not Harder --> By integrating face-to-face with online social media, you can be in more places at once and attract opportunities automatically.
  • Are You Ready for Smart Networking?
I hope you'll check it out :)

Build your network on LinkedIn. While many professionals have LinkedIn profiles, not many know how to leverage the profile as a job-search/career-management tool:
  • For "passive" networking: Increasingly, hiring managers are bypassing recruiters (to save recruiting fees) and passing along job postings to their online networks. The more connections you have, the more you will be in the flow of these opportunities when they come up. Your connections will have your resume and contact info right at their fingertips, making it easy to get in touch with you.
  • For "active" networking: You can search for companies you are interested in working for and see which of your contacts works there or knows someone who does. Perhaps they can set up an informational interview. Candidates coming in through this channel are being "referred in" by a trusted party and therefore will get a closer look and probably a faster response than if they had been one of the thousands coming through an open job board.
  • For interview prep: Before interviews, you can read the profiles of the people you'll be meeting. Not that you'd want to start rattling off their vital stats during the interview, but understanding their background and work experience might help you tailor your answers to their hot buttons.
  • For lead generation: You can keep tabs on your connections in an unobtrusive way, and see when they change jobs. Depending on the position, they might want to bring in people they know or have worked with before to build out their new team. Send a note of congratulations and an offer to be of service if they need any help. You don't want to sell, but just to get on their radar screen by offering your genuine support.

Here are a few quotes of inspiration and some food for thought about work and life ... CARPE DIEM (seize the day)

"Networking is more than meeting the right people. It's about connecting with their purpose and helping them achieve their goals. It's about connectin them with their success."

  • Craig Elias: Canada's Mr. Networking
  • "So you ask “what can I do to build confidence in myself”? Start by discovering who you are (your Personal Brand), which will allow you to understand what you need to do in order to gain this confidence you seek. Once discovered, it is all about repetition, through telling yourself that you are unique and “you have nothing to lose.” Saying this will help you be more outgoing, which translates into confidence."

  • Dan Schawbel
  • "Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives. Unfortunately most of us are completely unaware of this fact and we do not monitor our thoughts with the care needed so that we can create in our lives the results we say we want. Since the great majority of people do not feel worthy and deserving of abundant good fortune, radiant good health and total success in all areas of their lives that overriding thought pattern controls the results people get. The first order of business of anyone who wants to enjoy success in all areas of his or her life is to take charge of the internal dialogue they have and only think, say and behave in manner consistent with the results they truly desire. - Sidney Madwed

"You cannot escape the results of your thoughts. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration." - James Lane Allen

"In football you always get judged on your last game. Whoever you are, or how amazing you are, it's the last game that everyone has seen." - Thierry Henry

"80% of the stuff you get you are never going to need again. 20% you do need, and you need to prioritize its importance."

  • Julie Mahan
  • "It takes half your life before you discover life is a do-it-yourself project." - Napoleon Hill

"The only thing that doesn't change is change itself." - Heraclitus (You can't step into the same river twice, the old Greek said, because the water keeps moving. - If you're clinging to your old reliable tools, you're not just standing still, you're actually moving backwards from the point of view of those who are moving on with the river of technological change.)

"The secret of man's success resides in his insight into the moods of people, and his tact in dealing with them." - J. G. Holland

"To put distance between you and your competition, you must become more VALUABLE... not just more PRODUCTIVE."

  • E. R. Haas
  • "When one door closes another door opens; but we do often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." - Alexander Graham Bell

"Successful people are not necessary smarter than anyone else, they are simply more effective."

  • Ross Mackay
  • "You'll never achieve real success unless you like what you're doing."

  • Dale Carnegie
