Maj. (ret'd.) Corneliu Chisu, CD, M.Eng., CET, FEC, P.Eng. and founder member of AREC is campaigning to be elected as PEO President-elect for 2010-2011 PEO Council Elections.

As President-elect, Corneliu will strive to:

• Reduce P. Eng. Annual Licence fees by 8% to offset the HST imposed on fees. I will keep this reduction in place for twelve months, to show
respect for members in these difficult economic times. I will also establish a reasonable mechanism of fees management developed
through wide consultation with members;
• Establish a climate of fiscal restraint and responsibility;
• Introduce a proactive project management process for the improvement of our engineering building, in order to receive every possible grant available for achieving world class quality, while
making efficient use of our members' money;
• Involve members more, in our self-regulating profession through proactive government relations and the definition of areas of practice;
• Enhance public protection through strengthened
legislation and enforcement, such that only licensed engineers undertake engineering work;
• Develop a licensure model that captures the interests of all applicants to PEO and provides effective value at each stage of the licensing process;
• Embrace emerging disciplines; and
• Foster an effective and constructive relationship with OSPE, our sister Associations and Engineers Canada towards best serving the profession in a climate of financial responsibility.

DRIVEN SPINNING TOP - A ROMANIAN INVENTION

A DRIVEN SPINNING TOP fascinates by its propriety to maintain its direction around own axis. This is because the conservation of its kinetic moment when the spinning top is not influenced by any exterior force. If one applies a force and moves the spinning top its movement can change uncontrollable.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is well known that people like the classical toys: spinning toys, gyroscopes and permanent magnets.

Spinning tops are old toys. They are built from wood, metals, or plastic in different shapes, color and dimentions. Recently some of them produce a sound or/and light. Not much has been changed since beginning. Once it is put into rotation we just look at its movement. No posibility to change the movement, to interact with it.

Gyroscopes are well known toys and devices. They fascinate how the direction is kept constant.

Permanent magnets are used to obtain different configurations using balls, nails, ferromagnetic powder, magnetic fluids. Once the configuration is achieved nothing can happen more, no more fun.

The idea of combining the rotation movement of a gyroscope and permanent magnets has been advanced by Prof. Dr. Ioan Grosu in Romania (Patent No. 91857 from 28 Feb.1987). A classical gyroscope is modified by using two permanent magnets on the rotation axis, coaxial with it. So the gyroscope has an angular momentum and a magnetic movement. A uniform external magnetic field generated by a coil determinates a rotation that is the Larmor precession. This device is didactic and show how the Larmor precession is obtained. Such a gyroscope stimulates the spin of the electron with angular momentum and magnetic momentum.

Top 15 Most Beautiful Roads in the World

The Transfăgărășan (that’s the exact spelling) is the highest and most dramatic paved road from Romania. Built as a strategic military route by the former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu between 1970 and 1974, this road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Pitesti. The Transfagarasan represents 90 km of twists and turns run North to South across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains between the highest peaks of the mountain in this country.

On top of the mountains this road provides access to Balea Lake, a glacier lake which has been here for thousands of years and it also has an almost 1 km long tunnel straight through the mountain’s top. The road was built at a high cost both financially and from a human standpoint with more than 6 million kilograms of explosive being used on the northern face and official records of 40 soldiers who lost their lives while building it. Unofficial records however mention that only the tunnel took about 400 lives.

The north end of the road is the most spectacular and it’s dotted with steep hairpin turns, long S curves and sharp descents combined with an absolutely stunning view! Between October and June this road is under the snow and usually closed so… that means only a couple of months in the summer it’s available to enjoy a pure driving pleasure. Top Gear also named this road as the best road in the world !

Intel se alătură astfel unui lung şir de giganţi americani din domeniul IT&C care şi-au deschis centre de soft sau servicii în România, printre care HP, IBM sau Oracle. Intel mai deţine participaţii în România la companiile Siveco - cel mai mare producător local de soft şi Wind River. Intel este cel mai mare producător mondial de microprocesoare şi a raportat, în trimestrul al treilea, un profit net în creştere cu 58%, la 2,95 miliarde de dolari.

Azi, 30 Octombrie, a avut loc la Conestoga College, in Doon Valley, Seminarul pregatitor pentru obtinerea licentei PEO . Aceasta intalnire a fost organizata de catre AREC (Association Romanian Engineers of Canada) - South Ontario Chapter.

La acest seminar au participat Domnul Ilie Pasca, Presedinte AREC-SOC, Profesor Stelian George-Cosh, membru in consiliul academic al PEO si vice-presedinte AREC-SOC alaturi de alti membri activi ai AREC care au facut posibil acest seminar. People who work in the fields of science and technology are not like other people. This can be frustrating to the nontechnical people who have to deal with them. The secret to coping with technology-oriented people is to understand their motivations. This chapter will teach you everything you need to know. I learned their customs and mannerisms by observing them, much the way Jane Goodall learned about the great apes, but without the hassle of grooming.

Engineering is so trendy these days that everybody wants to be one. The word "engineer" is greatly overused. If there's somebody in your life who you think is trying to pass as an engineer, give him this test to discern the truth.

Engineer Identification Test

You walk into a room and notice that a picture is hanging crooked. You...

Straighten it.
Ignore it.
Buy a CAD system and spend the next six months designing a solar-powered, self-adjusting picture frame while often stating aloud your belief that the inventor of the nail was a total moron.

The correct answer is "C" but partial credit can be given to anybody who writes "It depends" in the margin of the test or simply blames the whole stupid thing on "Marketing."

Social Skills

Engineers have different objectives when it comes to social interaction.

"Normal" people expect to accomplish several unrealistic things from social interaction:

Stimulating and thought-provoking conversation
Important social contacts
A feeling of connectedness with other humans

In contrast to "normal" people, engineers have rational objectives for social interactions:

Get it over with as soon as possible.
Avoid getting invited to something unpleasant.
Demonstrate mental superiority and mastery of all subjects.

Fascination with Gadgets

To the engineer, all matter in the universe can be placed into one of two categories: (1)things that need to be fixed, and (2)things that will need to be fixed after you've had a few minutes to play with them. Engineers like to solve problems. If there are no problems handily available, they will create their own problems. Normal people don't understand this concept; they believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

No engineer looks at a television remote control without wondering what it would take to turn it into a stun gun. No engineer can take a shower without wondering if some sort of Teflon coating would make showering unnecessary. To the engineer, the world is a toy box full of sub-optimized and feature-poor toys.

Fashion and Appearance

Clothes are the lowest priority for an engineer, assuming the basic thresholds for temperature and decency have been satisfied. If no appendages are freezing or sticking together, and if no genitalia or mammary glands are swinging around in plain view, then the objective of clothing has been met. Anything else is a waste.

Love of "Star Trek"

Engineers love all of the "Star Trek" television shows and movies. It's a small wonder, since the engineers on the starship Enterprise are portrayed as heroes, occasionally even having sex with aliens. This is much more glamorous than the real life of an engineer, which consists of hiding from the universe and having sex without the participation of other life forms.

Dating and Social Life

Dating is never easy for engineers. A normal person will employ various indirect and duplicitous methods to create a false impression of attractiveness. Engineers are incapable of placing appearance above function.

Fortunately, engineers have an ace in the hole. They are widely recognized as superior marriage material: intelligent, dependable, employed, honest, and handy around the house. While it's true that many normal people would prefer not to date an engineer, most normal people harbor an intense desire to mate with them, thus producing engineer-like children who will have high-paying jobs long before losing their virginity.

Male engineers reach their peak of sexual attractiveness later than normal men, becoming irresistible erotic dynamos in their mid thirties to late forties. Just look at these examples of sexually irresistible men in technical professions:

Bill Gates.
MacGyver.
Etcetera.

Female engineers become irresistible at the age of consent and remain that way until about thirty minutes after their clinical death. Longer if it's a warm day.

Honesty

Engineers are always honest in matters of technology and human relationships. That's why it's a good idea to keep engineers away from customers, romantic interests, and other people who can't handle the truth.

Engineers sometimes bend the truth to avoid work. They say things that sound like lies but technically are not because nobody could be expected to believe them. The complete list of engineer lies is listed below.

"I won't change anything without asking you first." "I'll return your hard-to-find cable tomorrow."
"I have to have new equipment to do my job." "I'm not jealous of your new computer."

Frugality

Engineers are notoriously frugal. This is not because of cheapness or mean spirit; it is simply because every spending situation is simply a problem in optimization, that is, "How can I escape this situation while retaining the greatest amount of cash?"

Powers of Concentration

If there is one trait that best defines an engineer it is the ability to concentrate on one subject to the complete exclusion of everything else in the environment. This sometimes causes engineers to be pronounced dead prematurely. Some funeral homes in high-tech areas have started checking resumes before processing the bodies. Anybody with a degree in electrical engineering or experience in computer programming is propped up in the lounge for a few days just to see if he or she snaps out of it.

Risk

Engineers hate risk. They try to eliminate it whenever they can. This is understandable, given that when an engineer makes one little mistake, the media will treat it like it's a big deal or something.

Examples of Bad Press for Engineers

Hindenberg.
Space Shuttle Challenger.
SPANet(tm)
Hubble space telescope.
Apollo 13.
Titanic.
Ford Pinto.
Corvair.

The risk/reward calculation for engineers looks something like this:

RISK: Public humiliation and the death of thousands of innocent people. REWARD: A certificate of appreciation in a handsome plastic frame.

Being practical people, engineers evaluate this balance of risks and rewards and decide that risk is not a good thing. The best way to avoid risk is by advising that any activity is technically impossible for reasons that are far too complicated to explain.

If that approach is not sufficient to halt a project, then the engineer will fall back to a second line of defense: "It's technically possible but it will cost too much."

Ego

Ego-wise, two things are important to engineers:

How smart they are.
How many cool devices they own.

The fastest way to get an engineer to solve a problem is to declare that the problem is unsolvable. No engineer can walk away from an unsolvable problem until it's solved. No illness or distraction is sufficient to get the engineer off the case. These types of challenges quickly become personal -- a battle between the engineer and the laws of nature.

Engineers will go without food and hygiene for days to solve a problem. (Other times just because they forgot.) And when they succeed in solving the problem they will experience an ego rush that is better than sex--and I'm including the kind of sex where other people are involved.

Nothing is more threatening to the engineer than the suggestion that somebody has more technical skill. Normal people sometimes use that knowledge as a lever to extract more work from the engineer. When an engineer says that something can't be done (a code phrase that means it's not fun to do), some clever normal people have learned to glance at the engineer with a look of compassion and pity and say something along these lines: "I'll ask Bob to figure it out. He knows how to solve difficult technical problems."

At that point it is a good idea for the normal person to not stand between the engineer and the problem. The engineer will set upon the problem like a starved Chihuahua on a pork chop.

Dumitru Olariu has worked for more than 25 years with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) - An Agency of Industry Canada first as a Patent Examiner in Electrical Engineering, then as a Business Development Officer for Ontario. In his present capacity, Mr. Olariu helps people and organizations take advantage of CIPO's products and services, and the intellectual property (IP) system in general. His presentation will cover a quick overview of the main types of intellectual property in Canada, i.e. patents, trade-marks, industrial designs, copyrights, and integrated circuit topographies. Duke researcher credits nature with inventing the wheel

What's seen as the greatest invention in human history may not have originated in our brains at all.

Mother Nature, not humans, created the wheel and stuck it in all sorts of places: in insects, in birds, and even in our own bodies.

That's the claim made by Adrian Bejan, professor of mechanical engineering at Duke University, in an article published last week in the American Journal of Physics.

"Beliefs we take for granted are shattered," he said. "The idea that nature did not invent the wheel happens to be wrong."

The study is another step in Bejan's long quest to find simple, unifying physical explanations to account for the complexities of biology.

In 1996, Bejan invented the idea of constructal law, which spells out, according to a single principle, what it means to survive.

The idea is this: For any system, animate or inanimate, to persist in time, it must evolve to move with greater ease.

Nature's wheel fits nicely into this theory. According to Bejan, all forms of animal locomotion - running, swimming and flying - can be predicted and unified by the underlying wheel.

"This is a physics story of what it means to be the fittest, to survive in nature," he said. "I do not have to know Darwinian order to predict these biological systems. ... Biology is a subchapter of science. Laws of physics are for everything."

Numărul românilor din sudul Provinciei Ontario a crescut continuu ajungând în 2006 la cca 15,000 din care foarte mulţi sunt ingineri educaţi în România. Anul trecut un seminar AREC organizat în Kitchener de un grup de "localnici" foarte entuziaşti şi plini de iniţiative - Prof. Stelian George-Cosh, Dl.Ilie Paşca şi Dl. Radu Secăşan - Directorul ziarului Agenda Românească, a umplut la refuz o sală cu ingineri interesaţi să-şi obţină licenţa de Professional Engineer. Din ei, 15 participanţi au devenit pe loc membrii AREC demonstrând interesul inginerilor români să aparţină asociaţiei.

AREC este o organizatie non-profit care are urmatoarele obiective:

Cresterea reputatiei si pozitiei sociale a inginerilor de origine Romana in Canada.
Asigurarea platformei necesare dezvoltarii contactelor profesionale si sociale intre membrii sai. Membrii AREC cu experienta Canadiana ofera sprijin inginerilor Romani noi veniti.
Sa ajute la intelegerea diferentelor culturale si la dezvoltarea aptitudinilor personale si profesionale.
Asistarea inginerilor de origine Romana in procesului de inscriere si obtinere a licentei PEO.
Oferirea de ajutor in angajarea pe pozitii din domeniul ingineriei, prin informarea membrilor despre pozitii ingineresti existente pe piata muncii.
Mentinerea de legaturi socio-profesionale cu diferite organizatii profesionale si alte asociatii cu domeniu de activitate similar din Canada.
Dezvoltarea legaturilor socio-profesionale cu organizatii similare din Romania.
Promovarea si reprezentarea inginerilor educati in Romania in mass-media locala Romano-Canadiana.
Faciltarea de rate preferentiale de grup la asigurari auto si casa prin TD Insurance Meloche Monex.

Activitatile AREC se desfasoara practic prin cele 4 - 5 seminarii / intalniri anuale, dar si prin contactul constant intre Executivul AREC si membrii sai, precum si prin contactele directe intre membrii asociatiei. Fiecare an de activitate culmineaza cu un Dinner Gala, la care sant invitate si diferite personalitati din comunitatea Romaneasca si Canadiana.

In speranta ca ne vom intalni cu un numar cat mai mare de ingineri la constituirea sucursalei AREC Triunghiul de Aur, va uram o vara placuta.

Argumentele oferite sustin ca "ochiul uman este capabil sa interpreteze mult mai rapid orice imagine pornind de la proportia divina decat bazandu-se pe orice alt principiu. Este cunoscut deja faptul ca ochiul capteaza mult mai rapid informatia daca o scaneaza din stanga spre dreapta decat daca ar incerca sa o scaneze de sus in jos". Si privind la creatiile atator artisti de-a lungul timpului, putem descoperi aceasta proportie pretutindeni: de la capodoperele lui Leonardo da Vinci la lucrarile lui Le Corbusier.

Conform domnului profesor Bejan, "cu sau fara intentie, aceasta Sectiune de Aur reprezinta de fapt proportiile cel mai simplu de transferat catre creier. From Leonardo da Vinci to Le Corbusier, the golden ratio is believed to have guided artists and architects over the centuries.

Leonardo is thought to have used the golden ratio, a geometric proportion regarded as the key to creating aesthetically pleasing art, when painting the Mona Lisa. The Dutch painter Mondrian used it in his abstract compositions, as did Salvador Dali in his masterpiece The Sacrament of the Last Supper.

Now a US academic believes he has discovered the reason why it pleases the eye. According to Adrian Bejan, professor of mechanical engineering at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, the human eye is capable of interpreting an image featuring the golden ratio faster than any other.

Bejan argues that an animal's world – whether you are a human being in an art gallery or an antelope on the savannah – is orientated on the horizontal. For the antelope scanning the horizon, danger primarily comes from the sides or from behind, not from below or above, so the scope of its vision evolved accordingly. As vision developed, he argues, animals got "smarter" and safer by seeing better and moving faster as a result.

"It is well known that the eyes take in information more efficiently when they scan side to side, as opposed to up and down. When you look at what so many people have been drawing and building, you see these proportions everywhere."

Many artists since the Renaissance have proportioned their work in accordance with the golden ratio or "divine proportion", particularly in the form of the golden rectangle, which has informed Leonardo's work. It describes a rectangle with a length roughly one and a half times its width.

Works most usually associated with it are the Mona Lisa and the Parthenon in Athens, although Swiss architect Le Corbusier relied on it for his Modulor system for the scale of architectural proportion and Dali explicitly used it in The Sacrament of the Last Supper. The Parthenon's facade is said to be circumscribed by golden rectangles, though some scholars argue that this is a coincidence.

According to Bejan, these arguments are academic. Whether intentional or not, the ratio represents the best proportions to transfer to the brain. "This is the best flowing configuration for images from plane to brain and it manifests itself frequently in human-made shapes that give the impression they were 'designed' according to the golden ratio," said Bejan.

"We really want to get on, we don't want to get headaches while we are scanning and recording and understanding things," he said. "Shapes that resemble the golden ratio facilitate the scanning of images and their transmission through vision organs to the brain. Animals are wired to feel better and better when they are helped and so they feel pleasure when they find food or shelter or a mate. When we see the proportions in the golden ratio, we are helped. We feel pleasure and we call it beauty."

Bejan, an award-winning engineer who developed a new law of physics governing the design of matter as it moves through air and water in 1996, believes this "constructal law" governs systems that evolve in time, from cars in traffic to blood in the circulation, to how vision develops.

Vision and cognition evolved together, he said. "Cognition is the name of the constructal evolution of the brain's architecture, every minute and every moment," Bejan said. "This is the phenomenon of thinking, knowing, and then thinking again more efficiently. Getting smarter is the constructal law in action."

Earlier this year, in a paper published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, Bejan demonstrated how this law was behind his theory of how elite athletes had got taller, bigger and thus faster in the past 100 years. His latest application of constructal law to explain the golden ratio is published online in the International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics.

By all accounts, this has been stressful year for everyone, employed or not. The impending sense of doom (which I refused to participate in, by the way) has taken it's toll on a lot of us. I noticed it most especially in my business networking. In networking groups where people were normally freely sharing introductions, there seemed to be less sharing. And, both in corporate and in entrepreneur-land, people were just really, really stressed.

That kind of stress takes its toll. One of the things that happens is the folks isolate themselves, mainly because of the demands of their work. People are social beings, and this adds stress. For extroverts, this adds a lot of stress. However, having to dress up and make nice after a stressful day at work also adds stress. My point is that this kind of a pace isn't sustainable, and it isn't good for you. So, what is your personal recovery plan in 2010?

I'm going to go a little life coachy woo-woo on you and ask this question. What is it that feeds your soul?

For many of us, it is connections with others. If you've let your friendships lapse, perhaps now is the time to reconnect. It's the holiday season, so there's your excuse to get a jump on it.

This is also a good time to reconnect with your professional network. Although really, when isn't it Again, the holidays provide that entree.

And, let's take a look at 2009. Did you accomplish what you really, really wanted to? For many of you, your goal was to maintain the status quo in light of the current circumstances. For those of you who adopted the "hanging on for dear life" stance, perhaps that worked out for you, perhaps it didn't. I bet that many of you are behind where you wanted to be and didn't achieve the security that you wanted. How about the decade of the 2000's? Is this where you wanted to be when you looked into future at the turn of the century?

This is a good time to look at what you really, really want and set some goals around that. This is especially true if Time magazine was right and the last decade was a nightmare for you. If you've been working yourself to the bone, how is that serving you in the long run. Isn't it time to set a strategy that gets you more of what you want?

What I want for you is to be healthy, confident, contributing, energetic, engaged and thriving into the next decade. To be your best you.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The first time you see a Mabey-Johnson bridge, you’re likely to say to yourself, “That thing looks heavy!” You would be right. Just ask the field engineers who have to lift it.

In the sweltering summer heat of southern Afghanistan, field engineers from Canada and the United States are teaching 60 Romanian Army counterparts how to construct steel bridges over the streams and wadis of the region.

“These Romanian engineers are excellent workers — and they are eager to learn,” said Chief Warrant Officer Alain Guimond, a field engineer from Kingston, Ont., deployed in Afghanistan with the headquarters of ISAF Regional Command (South). “This work is very hard. The pieces of the bridge are heavy and a lot of preparation is required to construct this type of bridge.”

Manufacturing finally sees a boost in sales

Ottawa, ON -- Manufacturing sales increased 1.9% to $39.7 billion in June 2009, partially reversing the 4.9% decline posted in May. Strong sales in the aerospace industry and a rise in the price of petroleum and coal products largely explain the increase. Excluding both industries, Canada's manufacturing sales would have decreased 0.5%.

Constant dollar manufacturing sales rose 1.1% in June, indicating that greater sales volumes were responsible for more than half of the increase in sales.

Sales were up in 12 of 21 manufacturing industries in June, representing 68% of total sales.

World recovers from recession; U.S. will be next

The worldwide manufacturing sector, the fount of any lasting global recovery, is gathering unexpected steam.

Although glimmers of a turnaround appeared in mid-spring, the momentum has recently accelerated, providing further evidence the deleveraged recession is on the mend.

Although U.S. factory orders and manufacturing activity have more recently indicated a halt in a yearlong downturn, a European rebound has already returned to levels last seen just after the occurrence of the global credit implosion last year.

With China, Japan and India already taking the lead, powered by jumbo stimulus plans, and Brazil and Russia following suit, the ailing industrial sectors of the United Kingdom and Italy have started to boom again.

The European improvement has been broadly based, but has come forth especially strong in the timber and paper industries.

However, the overcapacity occasioned by months of manufacturing depression has not halted ongoing personnel layoffs or increased capital spending plans.

In an indication that the inflation specter is not lurking in the immediate future, output prices have as yet not been forthcoming. This reinforces the belief that overcapacity and a continuing glut of raw materials and ancillary manufacturing supplies will keep prices stable for some time to come.

As the U.S. manufacturing sector follows suit, a similar set of circumstances will manifest itself, as America's deflating industrial arena reverses an 18-month downward cycle.

An additional plus awaiting recovering American manufacturers is the increasing need for just-in-time delivery as inventories of components, as well as finished goods, have been cut to the bone.

The reduction of transportation costs within the United States also has reduced the advantage of imports, along with the shortened time factor.

According to the Current Business Outlook, commissioned by major accounting firm KPMG, global confidence in the recovering world industrial sector is surpassing previous expectations.

The Wall Street Journal (8/10, A3, Lahart) reports, "The rapid pace at which businesses shed jobs during the recession comes with a flip side: Workers will need to be hired back quickly as the economy improves." So "deep have companies cut jobs that Friday's employment report, which showed that the U.S. economy lost a quarter-million jobs in July, was seen as a relief." Businesses say "they are running lean" and "to be sure, even as more companies begin to hire as the economy recovers, it could take years before payrolls reach their prerecession level." But "one thing different about this recession -- and one more reason the job market may come back more quickly than in the downturns of 2001 and 1990-91 -- is that so many of the job losses have been at the service-related companies that have come to dominate U.S employment." Many service-related firms "may have a more pressing need than manufacturers to rehire workers as demand comes back."
The New York Times (8/8, A1, Uchitelle, Healy) reported on its front page, "The most heartening employment report since last summer suggested on Friday that a recovery was under way - and perhaps gathering steam - despite the reluctance of the nation's businesses to resume hiring or even stop shedding jobs." Employers "eliminated 247,000 jobs in July, a huge number by the standards of an ordinary recession, but the smallest monthly loss since last August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported." And the unemployment rate "actually ticked down, to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in June, mainly because so many people dropped out of the hunt for work, ceasing to list themselves as unemployed." But the employment report released Friday "included some unsettling information. ... never in the 61 years of recordkeeping has one-third of the unemployed, currently 14.5 million people, been out of work for 27 weeks or more."
Reuters (8/8) added that the government revised data for May and June to show 43,000 fewer jobs were lost than previously reported, but the White House said it still expected the unemployment rate to hit 10 percent this year.

"This year Rochester Institute of Technology hosted recruiters from defense-industry firms like Lockheed Martin (LMT, Fortune 500) and Northrop Grumman (NOC, Fortune 500), as well as other big companies like Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, Fortune 500).

"The tech fields are what's driving salaries and offers, and the top students are faring quite well," said Emanuel Contomanolis, who runs RIT's career center.

Specifically, engineering diplomas account for 12 of the 15 the top-paying majors. NACE collects its data by surveying 200 college career centers."

By comparison, immigrants who have been in the country five years or less saw a decline of 5.7 per cent. The story also said that immigrants will spend more time looking for a new job.

Catherine Karakatsanis is a senior vice president and board member at Morrison Hershfield Limited. She heads up the building and facilities division, which provides multi-disciplinary engineering expertise to the commercial,

institutional, residential, industrial and public sectors. After graduating with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering science from the University of Western Ontario (UWO), Karakatsanis was a research assistant at UWO’s Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory. In 1989 she joined Morrison Hershfield, where she

has had a diversified career with extensive engineering and management experience. She has

been a structural engineer, project manager and construction manager; conducted specialized engineering research for litigation; and held several management positions. Karakatsanis has been an active volunteer in the engineering community for over a decade, having served on the board of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) for five years and as OSPE president and chair. design and production management, and acquisition analysis and business operations, he has worked at the National Research Council, in the Alberta oil fields, CIL, Cockshutt, Abitibi and Rio Tinto (England), and held senior positions with Canadian Gypsum and Massey Ferguson before acquiring the 140-employee Canada Spool & Bobbin Company. Adams is president of Maple Leaf Engineering, a consulting firm specializing in lean design and manufacturing, wood processing machinery, and sawmill and dry kiln design. He was twice elected a regional councillor and has many years of chapter, committee and task force service. He chaired both the Governance Task Force and the Audit

Major (retired) Corneliu Chisu holds a BEng from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania, and an MEng in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto. He has been a military engineer and served with the Canadian Forces in

Bosnia Herzegovina (2004) as an engineer advisor to the NATO Multinational Task Force (NW) and in Kandahar, Afghanistan (2007), as a requirements officer of Task Force
Afghanistan’s Engineer Support Unit. Chisu has served as a public member of the Building Materials Evaluation Commission and was an application process administrator at PEO. Until 2004, he was the honorary consul of the Republic of Moldova (head of the consular post in Toronto) and secretary of the Consular Corps Association of Toronto. He served with the Italian Trade Commission in Bucharest and Toronto as technology transfer advisor. He worked as a research scientist and teaching assistant at the Energy Research Institute and Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Chisu was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration; Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; NATO medal for Balkan Operations; Canadian Peacekeeper Medal; and General Campaign Star Medal Afghanistan.

Ford continues to bet on Romania by bringing 200m euro to Craiova

Ford Motor Company, one of the world's leading car manufacturers, invested over 200 million euros in Ford Romania in January, the first instalment of the 675 million-euro investment aimed at bringing the Craiova-based car plant up to American standards.

The over 200 million-euro capial increase accounts for nearly half the overall foreign investments conducted in January in the form of capital contribution, according to data from the National Trade Registry Office.

While companies such as steel maker Voestalpine dropped their investment plans in Romania or shut down production, as was the case of Leoni on the Mioveni platform, the 200 million-euro investment is a "breath of fresh air" for the Romanian car industry.

Ford will attract its car part suppliers to Craiova, which will lead to the creation of over 40,000 new jobs. The sum is lower than the one announced by company representatives, who said at the beginning of the year that the Board of Directors of Automobile Craiova had approved a share capital increase by 250 million euros for Ford Romania.

Who is Calin Rovinescu? No stranger to Air Canada

Calin Rovinescu, new president and chief executive officer of Air Canada, “is not a traditional airline guy,” one analyst said Tuesday. But he is no stranger to Canada's dominant airline, or the turbulence it once again finds itself in.
As a corporate lawyer and managing partner with the law firm Stikeman Elliott, Mr. Rovinescu advised Air Canada in its successful 1999 defence against a hostile takeover bid by Onex Corp. and its partner, American Airlines Inc.
The following year, 2000, Mr. Rovinescu joined the airline as executive vice-president for corporate development and strategy. He subsequently served as chief restructuring officer.
“In the latter role, Mr. Rovinescu was a key figure in the company's emergence from [Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act],” analyst Ben Cherniavsky of Raymond James Ltd. said in a research note Tuesday. “We remember him as an impressive figure with a sharp mind and a keen understanding of corporate strategy.”

The Amazing Race: Visit to Romania - A Preview

Sunday’s episode of CBS’ The Amazing Race is sure to become a classic as teams travel to Romania and visit Transylvania, the home of Dracula’s castle. While there, teams will search for their next clue - which will be buried in a coffin outside of the castle. Teams will visit another landmark while in Romania: The National Sports Complex in Bucharest where Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci trained. While at the complex, teams will be faced with a Road Block where a member from each team will have to learn and correctly perform gymnastic maneuvers.

The third leg of the race will also be filled with drama as mishaps happen to a number of teams that could affect the outcome of the race. Tension continues to rise between Victor and Tammy as the siblings struggle to find a harmonious working relationship and the right path to get to their next clue. Brad and Victoria find themselves arriving at the airport after their flight to Romania has left. Kris and Amanda pull a Toni/ Dallas and lose their money and passports. Cara and Jamie lose patience when they learn their taxi driver isn’t as familiar with the area as he claimed.

As we watch Sunday’s episode, Amazing Race host, Phil Keoghan will be preparing to leave on his own adventure. The New Zealander native who admits to having flown across the United States dozens of times has decided to pedal across America to see the country up close. His itinerary begins in Los Angeles on March 28 and ends in New York on May 9 just in time for the finale of The Amazing Race the next day.

Phil plans to visit 30 cities and along the way will make appearances at open casting calls for The Amazing Race, and visit local GNC stores and CBS affiliates. He welcomes Race fans and former Race contestants to join him on his journey as he travels through communities and stops to sign autographs. He also plans to attend bike rallies sponsored by the National MS Society.

Engineers Remain In High Demand Despite Downturn.

The Wall Street Journal (12/23, Needleman) reports, "While the employment landscape looks sparse right now, the outlook for 2009 isn't uniformly bleak." Experts note that, "in the medical field, there aren't enough nurses, home-health aides, medical assistants and pharmacy technicians to fill vacancies at health-care providers, such as hospitals and clinics." Engineers are also in demand, particularly "those who specialize in environmental, biomedical, civil, aerospace and industrial engineering." Art Lucas, chief executive officer of Lucas Group, explained, "Companies still need people who can come in and design products. ... The manufacturing process also needs to be efficient, so people who have those technical engineering skills are always in demand." Further, "more engineering jobs...are likely to open up in the next year or so, thanks to a proposed stimulus by the incoming presidential administration that will focus on improving infrastructure."

ROME — As unlikely as it sounds, the Big Three Detroit auto makers might look to Romania for inspiration on how to reinvent themselves.
Romania is a struggling Eastern European country that gets little attention in the rest of Europe, or anywhere else. The country's industrial base is in rough shape, though slowly improving as it creeps into the European Union fold. But it has one industry that stands out as an international success story - car making.
Romania's Automobile Dacia is one of the few high-growth car businesses in the otherwise ailing global auto industry. The brand's French owner, Renault, couldn't be happier. The Dacia is a genuine low-cost car that rolls out of the factory near Bucharest with a fat profit margin.
The machine sells well throughout Europe, and elsewhere, because it is not a jalopy pieced together with 40-year-old parts from Warsaw Pact trucks. The Dacia's engineering and drivability, if not visual appeal, come close to the standards of the latest Renault cars.
The lesson: You don't necessarily need dazzling technology to make a buck in a competitive market (though it certainly can help, as Toyota learned with the hybrid Prius). You do need an inexpensive, safe, reliable car that can appeal to the masses.

Serata organizata de Asociatia Inginerilor Romani din Canada, AREC, care s-a desfsaurat la restaurantul Hava-Naghila din Toronto, a fost un succes, transmite portalul romanilor din Toronto, citat de Romanian Global News. In cadrul manifesatrii, devenit un eveniment de referinta in comunitate, au participat, in calitate de invitati de onoare, Dr. Valentin Naumescu, Consulul General al Romaniei in Toronto, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, P.C. M.P., membru al Parlamentului, si Denis Carlos, Consilier PEO pentru Regiunea Centrala Est.
La aceasta actiune, catalogata drept un eveniment excelent al comunitatii romanesti din Toronto, au participat 70 de ingineri. Cuvantarile tinute de George Oprea - Presedintele AREC, Bogdan Ionescu – Director ACASA, Denis Carlos si Dr. Valentin Naumescu, au confirmat interesul lor in activitati de intarire a comunitatii romanesti profesionale din Toronto si au fost toate primite cu interes si aplauze de catre participanti.
Honorabilului Jim Karygiannis i s-a inmanat traducerea in limba romana a "Charter of Rights and Freedoms" de catre Presedintele AREC, pentru publicare la Parlamentul Canadian.
Inmanarea Certificatelor AREC licentiatilor PEO2008 de origine Romana, ca si inmanarea unui cadou simbolic de catre AREC au fost centrul si motivul Seratei. A fost un moment emotionant, apreciat de catre toti cei din audienta.

IMPORTANT- Scimbare in procedura de vot din 30 Noiembrie a.c.

Ziarul ACASA a primit urmatorul comunicat al Ambasadei Romaniei la Ottawa. Va rog sprijiniti mediatizarea acestuia. Mesajul anunta schimbari majore privind procedura de identificare a cetatenilor romani care doresc sa voteze la 30 noiembrie 2008, in Canada.

Este un mare succes pentru noi, cei care traim aici si un merit al autoritatilor romane care au procedat la aceasta majora deschidere.

Stimata doamna/Stimate domn, Va informam ca pe site-ul MAE a fost actualizata lista documentelor acceptate ca
dovada a resedintei în Canada, aceasta incluzând în acest moment urmatoarele
documente :
1.. card de resedinta permanenta (Permanent Residence Card);
2.. permis de sedere (Visa Record of Landing);
3.. permisul de conducere (eliberat de autoritatile provinciale);
4.. cardul de asigurare medicala (eliberat de autoritatile provinciale);
5.. permisul de munca.
Conform ultimelor informatii de pe site-ul MAE, respectiv de pe site-urile Ambasadei
si oficiilor consulare din Canada, toti cetatenii români care au un pasaport CRDS
(care atesta stabilirea domiciliului în strainatate) sau un pasaport simplu valabil,
însotit de unul din documentele mai sus-mentionate (prin care sa dovedeasca

Toti ne dorim alaturi oameni supradotati, oameni care sa rezolve totul repede si perfect, sa imbogateasca lumea cu frumusetea sufletului lor, sa ne ofere cele mai minunate solutii sau idei care sa repare intreaga lume de problemele ei. Dar succesul in viata de adult depinde de o educatie de calitate la o virsta timpurie.

Fiecare copil este inzestrat de natura cu har si potential. Totusi, nu orice copil are acces la o educatie speciala daca este necesar. Un copil supradotat nu se poate dezvolta la potentialul maxim fara o educatie la nivelul sau de performanta. Primii ani din viata sunt considerati de catre toti specialistii in educatie la nivel mondial ca fiind critici in formarea caracterului, a deprinderilor, a inteligentei si creativitatii.

Avind in vedere importanta si seriozitatea proiectului care pe mine m-a entuziasmat total de cum am aflat, proiect care poate fi inceputul unei noi sperante pentru Romania dar care de data aceasta are toate sansele sa duca la mai bine, te invit sa te implici si tu. Pentru ca lucrurile bune se intimpla atunci cind iti deschizi mana si lasi din bogatie sa se reverse si asupra altora, asta iti va returna bogatie in viata ta. Prosperitate este atunci cind poti schimba lumea.

Pentru o pensie din Romania....

De la unul din membrii AREC am primit urmatorul mesaj:

"In atentia celor care n-au aflat inca despre posibilitatea de a inregistra cartea de munca in Romania pentru a primi (o cat de mica) pensie la vremea cuvenita.
Termenul de predare a cartilor de munca pentru scanare e 30 noiembrie a.c.

Transmiteti, daca vreti, vestea mai departe, la cei care pot fi interesati.

Lamuriri din partea unei romance care lucreaza in Brasov:
--
M-am interesat pt. Dvs. Stagiul minim de cotizare este de 15 ani, asa ca verifica
exact cati ani ai muncit in Romania. Daca doresti sa ai o pensie si aici, ar fi bine
sa-ti trimiti cartea de munca la scanat in RO.
In cazul in care ai muncit mai putin de 15 ani in RO, poti cotiza lunar minim 113 lei
pt. completarea stagiului minim, incheind cu Casa de pensii un contract de asigurare
pentru diferenta de ani (1-3 ani). In acest fel ai beneficia de o pensie mica si in RO,
care s-ar putea sa se mareasca in timp, la fiecare alegeri parlamentare/guvernamentale.:))
Sa nu uitam si anii de facultatea, mai nou se iau in calcul, ca stagiu de cotizare asimilat.
Inclin sa cred ca n-ar fi rau sa iti trimiti CM la scanat in RO, pt. ca impreuna cu anii
de facultate ai cei 15 ani de stagiu daca nu mai mult, ca sa fiu mai clara ai cotizat
suficient pt. pensie in RO. Ce ne rezerva viitorul nu pot sa-ti spun, la capitolul acesta
trebuie sa ceri relatii mult mai sus. Eu personal imi doresc doar sa apuc pensia, nu
prea ma agit cat de mare va fi ea. Circula o vorba referitor la pensie, sa fie mica
dar lunga. Adevarul e ca eu vreau o medie. Cu aceste informatii te las sa iei singur
o decizie.

1. Ca sa usuram efortul depus de cei din Executiv, am hotarat ca fiecare membru din Executiv sa aiba o echipa.
2. S-au alocat urmatoarele echipe:

* Treasurer - Florin Merauta/ Miki Peres - responsabil. Membrii in echipa: Marius Bordeiasu, Claudiu Preda
* Secretary - Dana Mateescu - responsabil. Membrii in echipa: Claudiu Rotaru, Costel Grozavu, Gabriel Barbu
* Vice-president - Daniel Cheoreanu - responsabil. Membrii in echipa: Alex Dragomirescu, Dacian Tunaru
* President - George Oprea
* Chairman Membership Committee - se va definitiva/revizui functia sau transfera toata activitatea la Secretary, la intalnirea din Ianuarie 2009.

3. S-au definitivat ultimile pregatiri legate de organizarea Seratei AREC (Dinner/Gala) pe 14 Noiembrie, 2008 - 7:00 pm
* O sa pastram focusul pe inginerii deveniti PEO anul acesta - lista PEO a fost primita de catre George
4. Traducerea Charter of Rights in limba romana a fost definitivata cu ajutorul ziarului ACASA si a Dnei Elena Mitulescu.
5. Cotizatia AREC ramane $40/an cu propunera ca pentru membrii noi veniti din Romania sa fie $20/an (propunere ce se va hotari la intalinirea din Ianuarie
6. Florin va informa Executivul despre situatia la zi a contului AREC si va dispune sumele necesare unor cheltuieli iminente - legate de Serata.
7. S-a decis de comun acord ca pentru a fi intr-adevar o retea profesionala website-ul ww.arec.ca trebuie modernizat si imbunatatit din punct de vedere al navigabilitatii, online applications, membership payments on line (through e-mail), feedback, etc.
Daniel va coordona cerintele si se vor analiza diferite oferte pentru intalnirea urmatoare a Executivului.
8. Lista membrilor/simpatizantilor AREC va fi preluata si intretinuta de Dana.
9. Conform intelegerii cu TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, membrii AREC care aplica pentru asigurari trebuie sa aiba cotizatia AREC platita la zi.
George a recomandat membrilor AREC sa ia tot pachetul de asigurari, inclusiv life insurrance, pentru ca este foarte avantajos.
10. Intalinirea urmatoare a Executivului va avea loc pe 14 Ianuarie, 2009 la ora 6:30 pm la Phoenix & Firkin, (416) 499-0383, 2175 Sheppard Avenue East, North York, ON
11. Stabilirea echipei care va organiza un picnic in vara 2009 se va definitiva la intalinirea din Ianuarie.
12. S-au propus urmatoarele activitati AREC pentru 2009:

Iata ca suntem la a treia editie a Seratei AREC.

In a recent tip I gave advice to those facing the challenge of a job search in a down market. How about those who have a job but may be nervous about keeping it? People often tell me they know they're doing a great job, but they're not sure their bosses or other higher-ups do. Well then, it's time to show them with a little proactive PR! Remember, personal branding isn't about telling people how great you are. It's about reaching out to others in ways that show what you care about and believe in.

With that in mind, I turned to Stephen Viscusi's Bulletproof Your Job: 4 Simple Strategies to Ride Out the Rough Times and Come Out On Top at Work, an entire book on how to make your personal brand at work unassailable.

Here's my list of just a few favorites pulled directly from the book.

Five Tips to Bulletproof Your Job Today

1. Introduce Yourself: "You don't need to get your name on a billboard to make yourself known to a company bigwig. You just need three things: say your name, assert your connection to her, and share your personal pitch... Follow up with an e-mail or handwritten note, reminding him of your brief meeting and saying how much you enjoyed it."

2. Volunteer to Lead: "Offering to take the lead shows you have a stomach for risk, the capacity to learn, and the desire for accomplishment that others might not possess."

3. Be Positive: "In short, positive people are easy to work with and negative people are not. And smart positive people are among the most valuable in the workplace.... You can choose to be positive - and to set off the whole chain of positive influence - simply by indentifying your current worldview and habits and making conscious positive adjustments... All you have to do is smile."

4. Be A Mentor: "...step up and offer a bit of support that will help newbies feel a connection that will make them want to stay in the game and get with the program... It allows you to plant seeds of influence and support throughout your company and your industry that will grow and become more valuable to you over time... You just need to know the ropes of your workplace and have some experience that would be helpful to someone else... Keep things informal, meet regularly, keep it professional, and keep up the connection."

5. Improve Your Networking Skills: "Job survival and advancement are about always having a substantial list of professional acquaintances... The most influential and useful are usually those who work in and around your field, but it's not at all unusual for an outsider to be the most effective person in your network... The Job Application Process

There are several steps to applying for jobs in Canada.

Research companies that hire staff with your technical training, knowledge and skills and identify those companies that have job postings.
Carefully read the posting to make sure you meet the qualifications they are asking for, and that the job is at a location you can get to, or would move to.
Review your resume to make sure it details information about yourself that includes the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to that job. (See Targeting Your Resume tips)
Write a cover letter that expresses your interest in this particular job. (See Cover Letters tips) Sometimes, employers will ask that you include your salary expectations in your cover letter. That means you need to do your research on what a reasonable salary range is for that job in that geographic area. (See Negotiating Your Salary tips)
Sometimes, employers will ask for a transcript from students or recent graduates. You can request an unofficial transcript from the Registration Centre. (It takes about 10 days.) Sometimes companies will ask that your References be sent with your cover letter and resume. (See References tip) Once you have created your cover letter and resume, have at least 2 people proofread them before you forward them to the company. They need to be 100% error-free! They are viewed as examples of your work.
If the company wants you to come in to their office for an interview, they will contact you by telephone or email, or by regular mail. They will offer you a date and time for your interview, and let you know the location. This is not usually negotiable. Interviews are set at the employer's convenience. (See Interviews tip)
At an interview, you need to be able to talk about yourself, your knowledge, skills and abilities, including your education and work experience. 1 person, 2 people, or a panel of people may interview you. Some companies have 2 levels of interviewing, so you may be called back to a second interview.

however the below added point caught my attention.
We at AREC relate very much with the below situation, so I think that this aspect of using LinkedIn should not be overlooked.
