Personal Recovery Plan 2010 By Carolann Jacobs

By all accounts, this has been stressful year for everyone, employed or not. The impending sense of doom (which I refused to participate in, by the way) has taken it's toll on a lot of us. I noticed it most especially in my business networking. In networking groups where people were normally freely sharing introductions, there seemed to be less sharing. And, both in corporate and in entrepreneur-land, people were just really, really stressed.

That kind of stress takes its toll. One of the things that happens is the folks isolate themselves, mainly because of the demands of their work. People are social beings, and this adds stress. For extroverts, this adds a lot of stress. However, having to dress up and make nice after a stressful day at work also adds stress. My point is that this kind of a pace isn't sustainable, and it isn't good for you. So, what is your personal recovery plan in 2010?

I'm going to go a little life coachy woo-woo on you and ask this question. What is it that feeds your soul?

For many of us, it is connections with others. If you've let your friendships lapse, perhaps now is the time to reconnect. It's the holiday season, so there's your excuse to get a jump on it.

This is also a good time to reconnect with your professional network. Although really, when isn't it Again, the holidays provide that entree.

And, let's take a look at 2009. Did you accomplish what you really, really wanted to? For many of you, your goal was to maintain the status quo in light of the current circumstances. For those of you who adopted the "hanging on for dear life" stance, perhaps that worked out for you, perhaps it didn't. I bet that many of you are behind where you wanted to be and didn't achieve the security that you wanted. How about the decade of the 2000's? Is this where you wanted to be when you looked into future at the turn of the century?

This is a good time to look at what you really, really want and set some goals around that. This is especially true if Time magazine was right and the last decade was a nightmare for you. If you've been working yourself to the bone, how is that serving you in the long run. Isn't it time to set a strategy that gets you more of what you want?

What I want for you is to be healthy, confident, contributing, energetic, engaged and thriving into the next decade. To be your best you.

What's your personal recovery plan going to be for 2010?

Dacia Duster Concept - premiera Dacia la Geneva 2009

Click here for high-res image gallery of the Dacia Duster Concept
Renault's low cost Romanian brand, Dacia, will be unveiling its very first concept at the Geneva Motor Show this week. Called the Duster, the concept features a crossover-style body with some very interesting styling elements like headlights that trail off across the front fenders and rear tail-lights that stretch forward across a flying buttress of sheetmetal above the rear wheels. Kudos to Renault designers in Romania and France for penning such an interesting shape.
* Duster is Dacia's first concept car and the fruit of close collaboration between Renault Design Central Europe in Bucharest, Romania, and Renault Design Technocentre in Guyancourt, France.
* Duster – Dacia's first concept crossover – is proud to be different. Seen from the driver's side, it is visibly a sporting coupé, yet passengers entering from the other side will see it as an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) with a traditionally opening front door and rear-hinged rear door which suggest plush travelling refinement.

A Lost European Culture, Pulled From Obscurity

Before the glory that was Greece and Rome, even before the first cities of Mesopotamia or temples along the Nile, there lived in the Lower Danube Valley and the Balkan foothills people who were ahead of their time in art, technology and long-distance trade. For 1,500 years, starting earlier than 5000 B.C., they farmed and built sizable towns... read full article here.

An exhibition opened last month and will run through April 25, 2010 at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University: "The Lost World of Old Europe: the Danube Valley, 5000-3500 B.C."

Here are a few quotes of inspiration and some food for thought about work and life ... CARPE DIEM (seize the day)

"Networking is more than meeting the right people. It's about connecting with their purpose and helping them achieve their goals. It's about connectin them with their success."

  • Craig Elias: Canada's Mr. Networking
  • "So you ask “what can I do to build confidence in myself”? Start by discovering who you are (your Personal Brand), which will allow you to understand what you need to do in order to gain this confidence you seek. Once discovered, it is all about repetition, through telling yourself that you are unique and “you have nothing to lose.” Saying this will help you be more outgoing, which translates into confidence."

  • Dan Schawbel
  • "Our subconscious minds have no sense of humor, play no jokes and cannot tell the difference between reality and an imagined thought or image. What we continually think about eventually will manifest in our lives. Unfortunately most of us are completely unaware of this fact and we do not monitor our thoughts with the care needed so that we can create in our lives the results we say we want. Since the great majority of people do not feel worthy and deserving of abundant good fortune, radiant good health and total success in all areas of their lives that overriding thought pattern controls the results people get. The first order of business of anyone who wants to enjoy success in all areas of his or her life is to take charge of the internal dialogue they have and only think, say and behave in manner consistent with the results they truly desire. - Sidney Madwed

"You cannot escape the results of your thoughts. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration." - James Lane Allen

"In football you always get judged on your last game. Whoever you are, or how amazing you are, it's the last game that everyone has seen." - Thierry Henry

"80% of the stuff you get you are never going to need again. 20% you do need, and you need to prioritize its importance."

  • Julie Mahan
  • "It takes half your life before you discover life is a do-it-yourself project." - Napoleon Hill

"The only thing that doesn't change is change itself." - Heraclitus (You can't step into the same river twice, the old Greek said, because the water keeps moving. - If you're clinging to your old reliable tools, you're not just standing still, you're actually moving backwards from the point of view of those who are moving on with the river of technological change.)

"The secret of man's success resides in his insight into the moods of people, and his tact in dealing with them." - J. G. Holland

"To put distance between you and your competition, you must become more VALUABLE... not just more PRODUCTIVE."

  • E. R. Haas
  • "When one door closes another door opens; but we do often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us." - Alexander Graham Bell

"Successful people are not necessary smarter than anyone else, they are simply more effective."

  • Ross Mackay
  • "You'll never achieve real success unless you like what you're doing."

  • Dale Carnegie
